From July 1967, the most luxurious VW Beetles were fitted with a soft plastic dashboard cover. This measure was in response to the many questions asked by loyal Volkswagen drivers, who kept referring to other brands when it came to the Volkswagen's sober interior design.
The place where the radio is installed was fitted with a plastic frame so that the optional radio blends in perfectly with the dashboard trim.
It's not uncommon for the frame to crack, which can happen if the radio is removed from the frame without care, and there are also owners who have removed or modified the frame to install a different size radio.
This new frame can accommodate both the old 40 x 180 mm radio and the DIN-size radio (50 x 180 mm). If you decide to install a DIN-size radio, you'll need to enlarge the frame on the inside by cutting out the raised edges.
