Shaft circlips are clamped into a shallow slot around a shaft to hold parts in place. The circlips are made of spring steel, so that they remain clamped.
Once the rusted lock washers are removed, it is advisable to replace them, as the action of corrosion reduces the clamping range and can cause the lock washer to lose its function.
The clips listed here have been used for various purposes. Below is a list of where these parts have been used, including the total number of clips used for this application.
Beetle:
- clamp ring for cooling air control on 25 or 30 hp engines and all models with a 34 hp engine up to 7/1964 (1 piecece)
- trunk lid hinge assembly lower side export models from 8/1961 and later and standard models from 8.1965 and later except 1303 (2 pcs)
- seat back adjustment mechanism from 8/1972 to 7/1975 (2 pcs)
Karmann Ghia:
- clamping ring with locking mechanism for cooling air regulation on 25 or 30 hp engines (1 piece)
Split Bus:
- spring-loaded gas valve for cooling air regulation up to 7.1964 (1 piece)
Bay Window Bus:
- locking device for the hinge pin of the spring-loaded shift rod for gearboxes with code CP or CX from August 1975 and later (1 piece)
Vanagon:
- Throttle lever bearing pin locking device 34 PICT-4 and -34 PICT-5 carburettors (1 piece)
- Handbrake lever bearing pin locking device (3 pieces)
Type 3:
- Notchback tailgate opening spring (2 pieces)
- Seatback adjustment mechanism (2 pieces)
