The stock steering damper is oil filled, it stops steering vibrations when it encounters obstacles like a bumpy road surface, and it barely reacts to small bumps, for which an oil filled steering damper is too slow. It would be nicer if this reaction happened much faster, which is why this gas-filled steering damper was developed.
A gas-filled damper is always under tension and can therefore react immediately when it encounters an irregularity. This results in a much smoother steering behaviour, especially at higher speeds, when travelling off-road, this type of steering damper is a great advantage.
