The ignition system of our classic Volkswagen can cause a lot of problems. After years of use, the distributor wears out and shows an increasing gap. You can replace the current complete distributor with a much better alternative: the 123 ignition for standard and high-performance engines.
The 123 ignition is delivered in a casing that looks like the original but inside you will not find any mechanical parts. The obsolete mechanical system has been replaced by a high-tech computer-controlled system, creating an optimal ignition system with maximum performance and is virtually maintenance-free.
All mechanical parts, such as centrifugal weights, springs, bearings and vacuum diaphragm have been replaced by a single piece: the central shaft with the rotor. The internal electronics take care of the correct pre-ignition and optimum contact angle at different speeds, so you get maximum sparkle at every rpm. The parts used to adjust the ignition are not subject to wear, just adjust them once and you don't have to worry anymore.
A small switch located behind the Allen bolt on the housing allows you to set the correct ignition curve for your engine (16 different settings are available). Each 123 ignition is also equipped with synchronisation technology that is normally only used in Formula 1, where very high speeds are reached. The electronics constantly monitor the amount of energy supplied per cylinder. Imagine that the compression of one cylinder deviates from that of the other cylinders, then the rotation of the flywheel becomes less regular and the rotation of the camshaft becomes less regular. The 123 ignition senses this and adjusts the ignition timing per cylinder, resulting in an engine that runs smoother, delivers more power and wears out less quickly. These are not the only advantages compared to traditional ignition, here is an overview of the additional benefits:
- automatic quick-start program with cold engine
- constant improvement of engine smoothness as described in the text
- contact angle (Dwell angle) is adjusted and permanently corrected
- switches off after one second when the ignition is switched on and the engine is not running (the ignition coil and battery are then spared)
- fuel saving
The ignition system 123 mentioned here is intended for cars equipped with a D-Jetronic injection system and is suitable for
- Type 1 engines
- Type 3 engines
- Type 4 engines
Note :
Include the recommended coil in addition (see "Options" tab), the coil already present is not suitable.
Optional Tip :
123 distributors have a universal housing, when mounted in our air-cooled Volkswagens, a gap is left between the distributor and the mounting bracket. To fill this gap, an optional ring is available (see options tab). It is not a necessity but it is recommended.
