The front wheel bearings are protected against dust and dirt by a grease cap, the left side has a hole for mounting the speedometer cable. The Volkswagen Vanagon is an exception, the grease caps are universally applicable with a hole for the speedometer cable on both sides.
The intention is not to fill this grease cap with grease, it is not a place to collect the grease. The grease is located between the front and rear wheel bearings and is retained by a pressure ring at the front and a retaining ring at the rear.
It often happens that the hole for the speedometer cable is worn, the cable can no longer be held firmly so that the speed is displayed unsteadily, or the speedometer no longer works at all. Replacing the grease cap is then the only possible option.
Note: If you replace the grease cap due to the problem mentioned above, order a new speedometer cable, which will also be subject to wear (indicated on the related parts tab).
